Iron removal
In alkaline water, iron is dissolved as ferrous bicarbonate and stays stable only while enough CO₂ is present. Contact oxidation on Ferox media converts it to an insoluble form, which is then filtered out as the water passes through the Ferox bed.
- Fe(HCO₃)₂ → FeCO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O
- K₂Z·MnO·Mn₂O₇ + 4Fe(HCO₃)₂ → K₂Z + 3MnO₂ + 2Fe₂O₃ + 8CO₂ + 4H₂O (Z: zeolite)
Manganese removal
Manganese is dissolved in much the same way as iron. It usually occurs together with iron but can appear on its own, always in far smaller quantities. It is removed by the same mechanism and often comes out together with the iron.

Iron removal calls for real water treatment experience. Designing from theory alone tends to cause problems in service, so the unit should always be sized from an accurate water analysis.
